Recessed Canopy Lighting

Canopy lighting refers to recessed downlights installed in the underside of an exterior overhang — entrance soffits, gas station forecourts, building drop-offs, parking garage ceilings, walkway covers. The job description: glare-free, evenly illuminated surface below; weather-tight against driving rain; resistant to tampering. VYSN canopy-rated recessed downlights are IP65 (jet water from any direction), use die-cast aluminium housings and quarter-turn lock retainers.

Why canopy fixtures need IP65 not just IP44

A canopy soffit is technically "covered" but in practice gets full exposure to wind-driven rain, salt spray near coastlines, dust and pollen. IP44 fixtures are rated only for splash water and fail prematurely in this environment — typically with electrical contact corrosion and water ingress through the gasket. IP65 fixtures use a continuous moulded gasket compressed against the housing, and stay dry for the full 50,000-hour LED lifetime.

Spacing and beam angle

Canopy ceilings are typically 2.5–4 m above the ground. For an even floor-level light pattern with no dark spots between fixtures, space them at 1.0–1.5 × ceiling height (so 2.5–6 m apart depending on canopy height) and use 60–90° beam angles. Narrow beams create accent pools but leave dark gaps; wide beams give the smooth even wash that gas stations and entrance canopies need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use indoor recessed downlights under a canopy?+

No — indoor IP20 fixtures will fail within 1–3 years under canopy exposure. Even covered canopy soffits get wind-driven rain and humidity that indoor fixtures aren't sealed against. Use IP65 canopy-rated fixtures only.

What about vandalism in public spaces?+

Look for an IK rating in addition to IP. IK08 (5-joule impact resistance) handles incidental knocks. IK10 (20 joules) survives deliberate vandalism and is the right choice for low-mounted fixtures in publicly accessible areas. VYSN offers both ratings depending on the model.
